Split is the heart of Dalmatia and is its largest city, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Thanks to its size, it is the main port of the Adriatic Sea, and also a great place to get a connection to the islands of the archipelago of central and southern Dalmatia: Brač, Šolta, Hvar, Vis, Korčula and Lastovo. Surrounded by the mountains of Mosor, Kozjak and Perun, the city is renowned for its shore quilted by bars and restaurants and, above all, the Palace of the emperor Diocletian, and the singular and emblematic bell tower of the cathedral. The palace building is particular for its shape and internal layout of the building which is a combination of an imperial villa, medieval town and a military encampment. There is also a very popular beach, Bačvice, where one of the recreational activities, popular among local bathers, is a game played in the sea with a ball, the ever-popular picigin. Most of the other beaches surround the peninsula of mount Marjan, a forest park that is a popular destination among the locals. They are predominantly sandy beaches with clear blue sea. Arriving in Split by the sea is always a spectacular experience, seeing the white stone of the shore and the green of the palm trees framed by rocky mountains will always take your breath away. This city offers a lot of content and sites in its historic centre and surroundings. In recent years, it has developed into the capital of summer music festivals, and young people flock there from all parts of the world. The historic centre of Split, the harbour and marina, the surrounding nature and the beaches, its proximity to other picturesque towns, such as Trogir, and the islands of central Dalmatia make this city a great starting point for a holiday on the Croatian Adriatic coast.
